Fishing techniques
Knots, rigs, and presentation
Practical methods for tying reliable knots, balancing rigs, and presenting bait or lures naturally in moving water.
Step by step
Assembling a dependable rig
A reliable rig balances leader line thickness, weight distribution, and hook size for a natural presentation. Work through each stage in order and check every connection before you cast.
1. Choose a leader matched to the target species and the water conditions. 2. Tie the hook with a clinch or improved clinch knot, then trim the tag end. 3. Place the weight so the bait sinks at a natural pace. 4. Test the rig by hand for slack, abrasion, and secure knots before fishing.
Field notes
Reading water and weather
Methodical line control and current reading produce consistent presentations in moving water. Keep slack under control so the bait drifts at the same speed as the current.
When water clarity drops or barometric pressure shifts, lighten the leader and slow the presentation. Fish often respond to a more subtle approach.
