Freshwater fishing
Rivers, lakes, and ponds: reading inland waters
Fast mountain streams, wide rivers, quiet lakes, and managed ponds each call for different tactics. This guide explains how to read the water and the species that live in it.
Three inland environments

Fast mountain streams
Read the seams where current slows behind boulders. Short, precise presentations and a secure footing matter more than long casts.

Wide rivers
Look for the tail of pools and the edges of faster water. Adjust weight to the flow and check local regulations before you start.

Lakes and ponds
Observe water clarity, vegetation, and depth contours. Still waters reward patience and careful observation over constant movement.
Species notes
Trout, pike, and perch
Seasonal behavior changes with water temperature and light. Check the permitted fishing period and minimum size for each species where you fish, and release fish that are undersized or out of season.
Handle fish with wet hands, support them horizontally, and keep time out of the water short. Verify local size limits before any catch is kept.
